Arizona applicants for a class G license must hold a current instructional permit for at least 6 months and either complete a state-certified driver education program with 10 hours of in-car instruction or complete documented supervised driving practice. Stop and Go recommends spacing lessons out and building toward substantial supervised practice before licensing.

In-car instruction can include high-volume traffic areas, complex driving, freeway driving, parking maneuvers, defensive driving, residential driving, lane changing, scanning, and speed control. Gold and Platinum packages may include an MVD road test waiver evaluation on the final hour of instruction.

The Arizona MVD approves and regulates professional driving schools. Licensed schools must submit applications and documentation for their programs. Students should choose an MVD-licensed driving school.

Instructors complete background checks, classroom and in-car training, and Arizona Motor Vehicle Division approval to become certified instructors. Instructors also complete ongoing training to maintain certifications.

An operator license, or class D license, allows a driver to operate vehicles that do not require a motorcycle or commercial license. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

A graduated driver license, or class G license, is issued to eligible drivers who are at least 16 but under 18 and includes certain driving restrictions.

Students must provide original or certified identification documents required by state and federal law. Requirements can include a primary identification document, Social Security documentation, and proof of residential address.

With a graduated or operator permit, the student must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and seated beside them. Permits are generally valid for 12 months.

Arizona requires drivers under 18 to hold an instructional permit for 6 months from the date of issue, or until turning 18, whichever comes first. After that, students may earn a license after successfully passing the required road evaluation or MVD road test.

If a permit expires, the student must contact the MVD or a licensed third-party MVD to renew the permit before continuing to drive. A valid permit must be carried at all times.
